78 imagesIn 2006 I photographed 5 Hip Hop artists from the Arab diaspora in the West at a concert in Amman’s citadel. Omar Offendum, The Narcicyst, Ragtop, Ekcentrik and Fredwreck performed together for the first time. It was also my first time seeing Arab artists performing Hip Hop. I then began a journey documenting the world of Arab Hip Hop, the project has taken me around the world, from Palestinian refugee camps in Beirut to hanging backstage with the Wu-Tang Clan in Amsterdam. Using words and music their message was striking. It was different from what the commercial music audience in the Arab world was consuming. These were’t songs about love, but conscious songs from the streets. I couldn’t ignore the connection with the message of Hip Hop in the Bronx in it’s early days and realizing that I was seeing the rise of a new cultural movement in my region. When Hip Hop as a culture has been commercialized in the world it came back to the roots of its message in the Middle East. I tried my best to capture a slice of the Hip Hop culture, its artists…the MC’s, the Djs the graffiti artists and the break dancers, both in the Arab world and its diaspora. I also found myself looking at their intersection with the international Hip Hop scene. The project is still on-going and my travels through the exciting world of Arab hip hop continues. This is a selection from this personal book project.
